Activate your eSIM before you hit the border — not in the queue

Border days are for documents, not for QR codes. If you are an international truck driver still scanning an eSIM in the Dover queue, you have already left it too late. Activate eSIM24 at the yard, on Wi-Fi, while you can still phone a colleague. This guide walks through cross-border connectivity the way HGV work actually happens: UK side, water or tunnel, EU side, and home again.

Why the border is the worst place to install

Ports are noisy, the phone is in a mount, and you may only have the home SIM’s roaming — which is exactly what you are trying to avoid. Captive-portal Wi-Fi at a ferry terminal will fight an eSIM download. The delivery policy assumes you can receive mail; it does not assume 4G in a concrete shed.

Buy from the store the day before. If you manage a fleet, issue lines from the office: transport fleets.

Dual SIM: the only layout that makes sense

Physical SIM

Company or personal number. Calls, SMS, banking 2FA. Data roaming off when you leave the UK (or whenever you do not want that operator to bill).

eSIM24

Mobile data. Hotspot. Maps. This is the cheap roaming Europe trick: you are not “on roaming” in the operator sense; you are on a prepaid Europe profile.

Do not convert the UK number to eSIM unless you like extra risk. Add a second line.

iPhone steps (short)

Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM → use the QR or the SM-DP+ details from the mail. Label it `eSIM24`. Mobile Data → eSIM24. Allow cellular data switching off if you want to avoid accidental UK-SIM data. Full device notes: esim-iphone-samsung-xiaomi.

Samsung and Xiaomi steps (short)

SIM manager / SIM cards → Add eSIM. Preferred SIM for mobile data = the new line. Enable the eSIM. If a “roaming” toggle exists on the eSIM, turn it on — some Androids treat all partner networks as roaming even when the plan is prepaid Europe.

After you drive onto French or Belgian tarmac

You should not add another eSIM. The Vodafone NL footprint already includes the countries on the plan card. Confirm on Europe eSIM. If maps die, 90% of the time the phone still has the UK SIM selected for data. Fix the default. Do not buy a kiosk SIM in panic.

Switzerland and other edge countries: check the list on the SKU. Do not assume “EU pack” means every mountain valley.

What to screenshot

• QR or activation code
• Order number
• ICCID if the mail shows it

If Gmail will not load in a dead zone, the screenshot still works. Dashboard copy is also valid delivery.

If install fails

Locked phone, no eSIM menu, or a mangled QR: stop. Refund rules do not treat “I have a locked EE phone” as a network fault. Contact [email protected] with the order number before you delete the profile.

Volume still matters after a clean install

When the profile is in, you can forget it until day 28. That is the point of activating before the border, not at it.

Channel Tunnel, ferry, and short-sea notes

In the shuttle or on the boat the radio will drop. That is normal. Do not toggle aeroplane mode twenty times; you will only delay re-attach. When you roll off in Calais or Rotterdam, give it a minute. Then open maps. If you still have the UK SIM as default data, you will get a roaming SMS from your operator — that is your cue that the dual-SIM split failed. Fix data, do not buy plastic.

Android extras that catch people out

Some Samsungs keep “adaptive data switching” on, so a weak eSIM cell silently jumps back to the UK SIM. Turn that off for work weeks. Some Xiaomi skins hide eSIM under “Mobile networks” plus a second “SIM cards and mobile networks” menu — search Settings for `eSIM` before you blame the QR.

If the profile shows as “inactive”, enable it. An added eSIM is not always the data line. That single missed toggle is the number one support loop.

iOS extras

iPhone may ask which line is for iMessage. Leave iMessage on the number the family knows. Cellular data = eSIM24. If you use Apple Watch, know that watch data is a different product; we are not selling a watch plan here.

Low Data Mode can be useful on the home SIM and should stay off on the eSIM if you need hotspot. Personal Hotspot must be allowed for the eSIM line in iOS cellular settings.

Aftercare

Keep the mail. Do not delete the eSIM “to see if it helps” while you are abroad without a Wi-Fi fallback. If you must reset network settings, you may need the QR again — hence the screenshot. Coverage questions belong on the plan page and Europe eSIM, not in a panic kiosk.
